History of the Lake Worth Church of God

History of Lake Worth Church of God

In the early 1940's Mother Lillian Stevens, who was a member of the 5th Street Church of God, led by the Holy Spirit, started a mission in the town of Lake Osborne, now known as the city of Lake Worth. As she preached the gospel of Jesus Christ, souls were saved. From this powerful ministry came a group of people that wanted to build a church.

With the help of James and Rose Mckinney, land was purchased and a wooden church was constructed. There were quite a few members that gathered and worshipped. As membership increased with family members, relatives and others from surrounding neighborhoods, more room was needed. Tom and Alma Young gave the church the adjacent lot to expand and build a dinning area.

In October of 1956, Bishop Ford registered the church with the International Headquarters of the Church of God, Cleveland Tennessee. Then the church was officially called Lake Worth Church of God. In the early 1960's the state office appointed Rev. Titus A. Rolle as pastor. He served the church faithfully for 11 years with the help of his devoted wife Margaret and their children.

In July of 1971, the state office appointed Rev. Henry Van Rolle, former pastor of Jupiter Church of God. After 2 years seeing that the old wooden church was badly in need of repairs, Rev. Rolle along with the members agreed to build a new church.

A building fund was established, and with prayer and fasting, the work began. It took much fund raising, pledges and sacrifice. The new building was finally complete. On March 23, 1975 the new building was dedicated to the Lord under, Bishop W.C. Menedez, State Overseer. Later construction was started on the dinning room.

In July of 1985 the state office appointed Bishop P. A. Nesbitt pastor. Bishop Nesbitt came with his family eager to work, which they did from maintaining the landscape to interior and exterior painting. The church began to grow, former members returned and new members joined. Later, we celebrated the mortgage burning.

Bishop Nesbitt formed, "The Lake Worth Church of God Gospel Choir." Under his leadership the choir traveled throughout South Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and the Bahamas.

Being a small church, Pastor Nesbitt adopted this slogan: "The small church with the big heart" we now use " The Growing Church with the Bigg Heart" Through the years the Lord has blessed Lake Worth Church of God.
Mother Marie T. Bozeman a woman who dedicated her life to the church.  She served as church clerk for over 35 years, attained her license in Ministry, which included teaching, preaching and counseling.  Her Ministry touched many lives from toddlers to adults.  But God saw her getting tired, and he whispered to her on January 25, 2005, “Come to me”.

Senior Pastor, Bishop Prince Albert Nesbitt, Jr., a man of great courage, a man of unwavering faith.  He was not only our Pastor, but also a Father, Brother and a Friend to many.  He was a man that stood by his word.  He believed, “You have not because you ask not”.  His motto, “Follow me as I follow Christ”.  On June 24, 2006 the Lord called his faithful servant home from the labors of this world, to a home of rest.

Since the going home of our senior Pastor, our Assistant Pastor, Reverend Cardinal G. Nesbitt, has been officially appointed, by the Church of God, State Administrative Bishop,  Thomas Chenault, as Senior Pastor of the Lake Worth Church of God as of July 1, 2006.  We are so blessed.  Remember, And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.  What shall we then say to these things?  If God be for us, who can be against us?

Continue to lead us as we cling to our Blessed Savior, Jesus Christ.
